This Saturday saw a welcome return for the Amber and Blues after a long 19 months without playing. A short trip over the hill saw an impressive looking team take on Widden Old Boys II.
A new look team with some old heads, captained by the new club captain Mark Newman, started off with an intense determination to dominate a handy looking Widden outfit. The forwards made quick work of the oppositions' advances and Widden found themselves pinned in their 22. For what seemed an eternity, Cainy stayed camped in the oppositions' half but unfortunately were unable to break them down. Several smart plays from the backs saw Widden concede several goal line drop outs.
Following sustained pressure, Widden showed great resolve and managed to break into Cainy's half, with 10 minutes to go of the first half. They worked the overlap well forcing Carter to try for the intercept but unfortunately with a large overlap outside for Widden and Carter only getting a finger tip to it, the ref deemed it a marching offence leaving Cainy down a player for 10 mins. Widden quickly dispatched the defence and took full advantage of the numbers game finishing the half a try up.
The second half again saw some great defence from both teams and Cainy held the home team out to get Carter back on the pitch. More pressure from the impressive pack pushed the Widden fly half to elect for the posts when a penalty was conceded. Unfortunately, Cainy just couldn't find the continuity they needed and the decisions started going against them. This didn't deter Cainy however, and following a brilliant restart by Jack, Cainy once again found themselves camped in the opositions' 22. Finally, the backs made some inroads allowing Polly to crash over and add a try to a very good individual performance. Following a few unlucky plays, Widden found themselves on the board again before again taking an easy 3 points to extend the lead and wrap the game up.
A fantastic first game back and great to see the new Cainy boys take to the field with some old returning heads.
